The longer wavelength of Q-switched Nd:YAG (1064nm) leads to increased skin penetration and reduced melanin absorption.
In Q-switched laser tattoo removal, mechanical breaking of tattoo pigment in the intracellular flake organelles is considered to be the main process in tattoo removal by Q-switched laser, which can penetrate at least 1 mm of skin. With its Q-tuning, tuning "quality" or pulse characteristics, high power output can be achieved and delivered in a short period of time, at the nanosecond level and more recently in the picosecond range, equating to a high destructive power focused on priority targeted tattoo pigments.
